Curious Hawaiian Monk Seal
16 in. diameter. Oil on canvas 2011 FOR SALE 16" diameter. Oil on canvas. This one kind of formed before my eyes. I did plan on the seal looking right at me through a porthole. What I didn't expect is that this cute guy wanted to actually come through the window! TOO CURIOUS! WHOOOW! There is some bad news. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a very endangered species. It is heading for Critically Endangered Species. In fact this seal is the most endangered seal in the United States. Pollution, starvation, entanglement in fishing nets, loss of habitat due to human interference, and yes, HUNTING are the causes. In Hawaii many of these seals are murdered for resting on a beach and reasons unknown. A man in Kauaii shot and killed one that was pregnant, just for sleeping on the beach he wanted to go fishing! The good news is there is a new law passed in Hawaii. Anyone who tries to hurt one of these seals in anyway will be fined $50,000 plus 5 years in prison.
